Big Australia: is continued immigration what the country needs?

The Sydney Morning Herald

23-05-12 08:00

Readers of The Sydney Morning Herald have expressed concerns about immigration, calling for policies to help alleviate the lack of infrastructure in cities, such as lack of housing and public transport, and measures to encourage businesses to regional areas. One reader suggested an annual automatic indexation of income tax thresholds linked to inflation and/or wage movements to create fairness, whilst others questioned the need for continued mass immigration, arguing that it is antithetical to climate action and contributes to traffic congestion, inadequate infrastructure and the destruction of the environment. Others pointed to the sense of disempowerment felt by those who feel that their concerns about housing are ignored in favour of investors' profits.

Concerns about growing social inequality and the retreat of government services were also expressed, with one reader calling for the government to provide a $300bn investment in public schools. They argued that a society that is increasingly self-centred leads to a sense of entitlement amongst different sections of society, making it more difficult to obtain a consensus and address issues such as the financial crisis. Others called for more effective measures to regulate vehicle emissions, and stop ‘gas-guzzling and polluting’ vehicles from dominating the roads.

Memphis ‘snake factory’ transplants slither into their new home in Louisiana

The Toronto Star

23-05-12 05:15

Five Louisiana pine snakes bred in Miami have been released in Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana to support a conservation effort co-ordinated by zoos in Memphis, New Orleans, Fort Worth and Lufkin. The species is listed by the federal government as threatened and the pine snake larvae will be among more than 100 snakes to be released in the central Louisiana forest this year. The species depends mainly on the gophers that live in burrows there for both food and shelter. The pine snake is a non-venomous constrictor and is not considered a danger to humans.

Volkswagen CFO: Next-generation software platform to come towards 2027, 2028

Reuters

23-05-11 13:21

Volkswagen’s software unit Cariad will delay the launch of its next-generation 2.0 platform by one to two years until 2027 or 2028. The software, which would be capable of enabling Level 4 autonomous driving, was originally set to be launched in 2026, but has been delayed due to development issues. Cariad’s chief financial officer, Arno Antlitz, said that the company first wants to focus on implementing an earlier version of the platform for premium electric models from next year, such as the E-Macan and Audi Q6 E-Tron. Volkswagen aims to develop software expertise through in-house production and outside partnerships.

Why the Silver Shadow is still the coolest classic car in the world

Financial Times

23-05-11 13:19

The recently-held Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club Annual Rally & Concours d’Elegance celebrated the British-made Rolls-Royce "Silver Shadow". First introduced in 1965, the Silver Shadow broke the mould with a modern look, driving feel and monocoque chassis. Rolls-Royce attracted rocker clientele such as The Who drummer Keith Moon, Elton John, Freddie Mercury and Paul McCartney, who all commissioned Shadows in colours such as aubergine, beige and gold. Now well into their comeback years, Silver Shadows cost an estimated average of £25,000 ($33,000) for a sensible car and £45,000 for the best ones.

Carmakers echo Stellantis call to delay EU rules on electric vehicles

Financial Times

23-05-17 17:19

Stellantis has become the first carmaker to urge the UK to renegotiate the terms of its Brexit deal. The parent company of car brands including Alpha Romeo, Peugeot, Vauxhall and Chrysler has called for a delay to beefed-up European Union (EU) “rules of origin”, saying that these could lead to it having to close its Ellesmere Port factory. The factory could be forced into closure as electric vans produced there, which comprise over 70% imported components, face a 10% tariff when they are exported to the EU from next year. Stellantis warned rising costs of raw materials, supply chains and the conflict in Ukraine had prevented it from meeting its planned content standards when announcing the expansion of the Cheshire plant in 2021. Car manufacturers across the UK and continental Europe have echoed its concerns over the rules of origin, which they claim will raise costs for EV drivers and reduce uptake.

Everton fail to edge away from abyss despite late Mina strike

Telegraph

23-05-20 17:30

In a tense and dramatic game, Everton managed to secure a point after a last-gasp equaliser from Yerry Mina against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite starting Domonic Calvert-Lewin, who was only 60% fit, Everton were unable to find the back of the net in the first half, and then found themselves a goal down when Hwang Hee-chan tapped in a rebound just before half time. Everton improved in the second half, led by Alex Iwobi and Demarai Gray, but it wasn't until deep into injury time that Yerry Mina was able to poke home the equaliser to secure Everton a point, which may prove crucial in their battle to avoid relegation.

Mina’s last-gasp equaliser at Wolves gives Everton hope of survival

The Independent

23-05-20 16:28

Yerry Mina scored in the dying seconds to give Everton a point in their fight for survival against Wolves. Hwang Hee-chan’s goal for the home side put Everton under pressure to respond, particularly after striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin was forced off with an injury just before half-time. The Toffees remain two points above the relegation zone, and with both West Ham and Leicester able to overtake them with results on Sunday and Monday. Victory for Bournemouth in their game against the Toffees next Sunday would almost certainly relegate Carlo Ancelotti's side.
