  • China’s announcement that Micron has failed a security review has left Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, two of the biggest makers of memory chips in the world, facing a dilemma of whether to expand their market share in China and risk irking Washington or refrain from doing so and potentially anger Beijing. Last month, the U.S. asked Seoul to urge its chipmakers not to fill any market gaps left by a potential Chinese ban on Micron.

  • Some analysts see Micron’s headwinds as a clear business opportunity for Samsung and SK Hynix, with Lee Seung-woo, a senior analyst at Eugene Investment & Securities, saying that they can take over as much volume as Micron loses in China. Mark Li, an analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein, estimates that Micron would lose low single-digit percentage of revenue due to the ban, with China likely to approach the South Korean companies to supply memory chips.

  • China’s Foreign Ministry expressed its opposition to any attempts to keep South Korean chipmakers from selling to China and reiterated its opposition to export controls. Brady Wang, a semiconductor analyst with Counterpoint Research, estimates that the ban on Micron’s products in China will have a limited impact on the global memory chip industry due to the oversupply of the market. Samsung and SK Hynix have secured an export waiver from the U.S. government to continue supplying their Chinese facilities with production equipment.
