缅因州林务局表示，列车出轨后冲入树林并引发小火，但消防人员迅速控制火势，3名铁路员工受伤送医。
林务局表示，初步评估可能是因“融冰和碎屑冲毁部分铁轨”导致火车出轨。列车上虽有一些危险物品，但现场官员评估这些物品没有外泄或起火风险。
加拿大太平洋铁路公司（Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd）公关主管卡尔森（C. Doniele Carlson）证实，火车在杰克曼（Jackman）以东约24公里处出轨，火车货物中的危险元素不是造成起火的原因。
