England U20 World Cup squad left with 13 outfield players as Chelsea block call-up

Telegraph

23-05-16 18:01

Chelsea have prevented Carney Chukwuemeka's call-up to the Under-20 World Cup, leaving England with a squad of just 16 players, including three goalkeepers. The midfielder wanted to join Ian Foster’s squad, but his club opted to keep him for their remaining Premier League games. Chelsea have nothing to play for in their final three matches and will use Chukwuemeka who was signed from Aston Villa last summer for a deal starting from around £20m. Before Foster selected his team, Juventus blocked Samuel Iling-Junior’s call-up, while Jamie Bynoe-Gittens also stayed with Borussia Dortmund.

Y. Michele Kang, who purchased the Washington Spirit last year for $35m, will create a multi-club organisation spanning the globe to promote women's soccer. The company will combine Kang's majority share in the Spirit with French club Olympique Lyonnaiş, which has won the UEFA Women's Champions League eight times, and could bring together three or four clubs under its banner by the close of the year. Each club, which will keep its established identity, will be able to leverage strengths in areas such as player data analysis and coaching, the founder of the organisation said in an interview. She reported her boyfriend’s abuse. Two months later, she was murdered

The Independent

23-05-16 16:21

Gabriella Gonzalez was executed in a Dallas gas station by her ex-partner, Harold Thompson, after months of abuse, culminating in his threatening her and her three children. A warrant for Thompson’s arrest had already been issued in March 2022 but he had not been taken into custody. Gonzalez had just returned from Colorado following an abortion when Thompson, who had reportedly made threats when he learned about the termination, attacked her. Texas recently banned most abortions in the state, a decision supported by Thompson which added to Gonzalez’s fears for her safety. The state’s repressive abortion regime saw Gonzalez travel to another state to organise the procedure. Released surveillance footage shows Thompson attempting to choke Gonzalez, before returning to his vehicle to retrieve a gun and killing her. Thompson is now under arrest and has been charged with murder.

Lower child-care fees could see 100,000 more Ontario women in workforce: report

The Toronto Star

23-05-16 15:09

Ontario's $10-a-day childcare programme has the potential to bring almost 100,000 women into the labour market, but the government must create more daycare spaces, according to the provincial financial watchdog. The Financial Accountability Office also warns in a new report that the 71,000 new childcare spaces planned will not be enough to cope with demand and that if insufficient spaces are created, the benefits of the program could be lost. The report also finds a significant discrepancy between the employment rates of men with young children and women in the same category.

CBC

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally and women have been historically underrepresented in clinical research. Dr. Susanna Mak, a cardiologist and principal investigator at Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital, is leading a new heart study specifically focusing on post-menopausal women. Mak aims to understand how heart complications are different for men and women, including whether it happens at different times, as well as how ageing affects the mechanics of the heart and circulation. The study includes invasive measurement methods, and Mak is keen to include and represent women who are absent from historical research across many fields.

Trial of Senegalese opposition leader postponed as protests continue

RFI

23-05-16 19:36

Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko faces accusations from a woman who worked at a massage parlour of sexual assault and making threats on his witnesses' lives. Sonko and his supporters claim that the charges are part of a political conspiracy to target his candidacy in the next presidential election. The trial, which began Tuesday, has sparked protests pitting the opposition against President Macky Sall and law enforcement forces. In the past year, there have been several protests calling for Sall to resign due to alleged corruption. Sall has held the presidency for over ten years and is yet to announce whether he will seek re-election in a move that opponents argue would be unconstitutional. The situation is expected to remain tense for the foreseeable future.

In contrast to Bud Light, which has removed two executives and seen its stock price fall after an ad campaign featuring transgender TikTok influencer Dylan Mulvaney caused a backlash, Molson Coors insisted there was "nothing controversial" about its advert.

North Carolina upholds 12-week abortion ban

BBC

23-05-17 01:30

North Carolina's Republican-controlled legislature has voted to override Democratic Governor Roy Cooper's veto of a bill banning most abortions after 12 weeks. The Care for Women, Children and Families Act was passed by the state Senate along party lines on 4 May, but was subsequently vetoed by Cooper, who described it as a block to progress. The new law bans abortions at 12 weeks, mandates that those after that time be carried out in hospital and restricts the use of abortion pills after 10 weeks. Official figures indicate the number of abortions rose 37% in North Carolina after a 2020 Supreme Court ruling ended US-wide abortion rights.

Why we can’t name the high-profile man charged with rape

The Sydney Morning Herald

23-05-17 01:24

Media outlets and members of the public are prohibited from naming an unnamed rape suspect in Queensland, Australia, because of Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act. The act states that anyone charged with rape, attempted rape, assault with intent to commit rape, and other sexual offences cannot be identified publicly until a magistrate has decided there is enough evidence available for a trial and has referred the matter to the district or supreme court. The defendant has been charged with rape over an alleged incident in October 2021. A coalition of media organisations had earlier appealed for the man’s identification to be revealed on grounds of public interest.

Amanda Craig: ‘Chick lit has been disastrous for women writers’

Telegraph

23-05-17 06:00

Midlist author and novelist, Amanda Craig, who has been dubbed a modern-day Anthony Trollope, has spoken out about the difficulties of making waves as a midlist author of traditional socio-political novels. Craig said that in a market saturated by debut novelists, the novels of midlist authors could be perceived by readers as a "lecture". Craig believes that the state of the nation novel is an unfashionable genre these days and said that she is "lucky my publisher has always stood by me, albeit recently somewhat nervously.” Increasingly, Craig suggests that writers are under pressure not to include characters who could be seen as being offensive, especially in the US.

Women are wearing ‘subway shirts’ over outfits to deter ‘creepy’ men

The Independent

23-05-17 03:37

Women are sharing videos on TikTok showing how they wear oversized T-shirts, or 'subway shirts', over their outfits to protect themselves from unwanted attention on public transport. Some women have also reported wearing specific clothing on ride-sharing platforms such as Uber or Lyft. The trend, which has become a topic of conversation on TikTok recently, has generated a mix of sadness as well as agreement that it is a “sad but necessary” response to harassment, despite one user acknowledging that what women wear "doesn't matter" in such scenarios.

She killed the man raping her. Now Mexican woman faces 6 years in prison

The Toronto Star

23-05-17 03:25

A Mexican woman who killed a man in 2021 while defending herself from him attacking and raping her has been given a sentence of over six years in prison for homicide with “excessive use of legitimate defense,” in what her legal defence called a “discriminatory” decision that will be appealed. While the court found that Roxana Ruiz had been raped, it stated that hitting the man in the head would have been enough to defend herself, and ordered her to pay over $16,000 to the dead man’s family. Women’s rights groups have accused Mexican authorities of failing to judge cases with a gender perspective.

Women staying longer at P.E.I. shelter because there's nowhere else to go, staff say

CBC

23-05-17 09:00

Demand for women's shelter beds in Prince Edward Island is surging, with Blooming House seeing most nights either full or almost full. Women are having to stay there for months due to a lack of housing and space in addictions and mental health treatment programmes elsewhere. The demands are making operating the eight-bed, $600,000-a-year operation increasingly challenging as staff work to find new options to help women move on. Blooming House co-founder, Brynn Devine, said the shelter's Executive Director sees a wide range in women - everyone from 18-year-olds up to senior citizens, people dealing with mental health or addictions, and people working who can't find or afford housing. While current funding is stable, Devine and co-founder Liz Corney hope they can expand their services in the future, adding another location that can provide transitional housing for women that would provide services and full-time housing.

How top women advisors manage being successful while raising children

The Globe and Mail

Sophia Ito, one of Canada's Top Women Wealth Advisors, has spoken to The Globe and Mail about how she has managed her career in wealth management alongside raising her two daughters. Only 15-20% of financial advisors in Canada are women, but almost half of those listed in the inaugural Canada's Top Women Wealth Advisors’ ranking have children under the age of 18. For Ito, having a supportive partner at home and a collaborative structure at the office helped her to manage her priorities over the years so that she now has more time for her career. She is due to be presented with the Women in Wealth Management award from Wealth Professional on 28 November.
