Here’s why I’m not smug about driving an EV

The Globe and Mail

Electric vehicles (EVs) are not entirely environmentally pure, according to a report by Rob Carrick, a financial columnist with The Globe and Mail. There are numerous factors that need to be taken into account before making a judgment on the green credentials of an owner, he said. Firstly, the way in which the power was generated to charge the EV must be considered. Secondly, the manufacturing process of a vehicle that has been wholly produced abroad carries an environmental cost. Finally, an EV owner must take into account the fact that he or she is driving another vehicle on roads, which adds to congestion and pollution.

The crisis follows similar bad news in Europe, the US and elsewhere, which forced Japan's transport ministry to toughen scrutiny of car makers introducing new models.
