Canada has expelled Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei after an intelligence report claimed he tried to target a Canadian MP who criticised China's treatment of Uighur Muslims. The decision, which marks an escalation in Sino-Canadian relations, may prompt China to respond. Beijing has denied seeking to interfere in Canadian internal affairs. However, Canadian media outlets have published anonymous intelligence sources alleging China tried to interfere in the last two Canadian elections. Ottawa has previously accused China of efforts to meddle in the 2019 and 2021 Canadian elections, but said such efforts did not alter the outcome.
Scientists have used the James Webb Space Telescope to view concentric rings of dusty debris orbiting the nearby star Fomalhaut. The star is one of the brightest in our night sky and is 25 light years from Earth. Scientists first discovered some of the dust belts around the star in 1983, but Webb allowed them a much better view and the discovery of two more. The three belts are populated by planetesimals: objects thought to form early in a star system's history and some of which go on to form planets while others remain as debris.
A man who threw gravel at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the 2021 election campaign has been sentenced to 90 days of house arrest and one year of probation by a court in Ontario. Shane Marshall pleaded guilty in March to a charge of common assault related to the incident, and the judge noted that Marshall's conduct had the potential to cause serious injury to a senior politician. However, Marshall's remorse and lack of a criminal record were mitigating factors in the sentencing. The prosecutor had asked for a 30-day jail term, while Marshall's lawyers had requested a 60-day community sentence.
