  • Hong Kong’s Chia Tai Enterprises International’s shares rose nearly 800% after Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba, was reported to have met with Dhanin Chearavanont, the senior chairman of CP Group, and his son Suphachai Chearavanont, the CEO of CP Group, in Hong Kong over the Lunar New Year holiday.

  • Jack Ma has met with the Chearavanont family twice in the space of a month, the first being in early January at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Bangkok.

  • Jack Ma has been under heavy pressure from Beijing since a speech in October 2020 in which he attacked China’s financial regulators and financial system. This led to Alibaba being fined more than 18 billion yuan ($2.6 billion) and a halt to Ant’s planned initial public offering.

  • Ma has largely disappeared from public view since the speech and was reportedly living in Tokyo in November and receiving medical treatment there.

  • Despite the share price surge, Chia Tai’s market capitalization is still only about HK$1.5 billion ($191 million) and Japanese trading house Itochu Corp. has a 25% stake in the company.

  • CP Group, Thailand’s largest conglomerate, has businesses spanning from food production and retail to telecommunications and its dominant position in Thailand has enabled it to enter new markets early.
