Canada has expelled a Chinese diplomat, triggering a retaliatory move from Beijing. Hours after Beijing warned Canada not to remove Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei for alleged interference in Canadian politics, China expelled Jennifer Lynn Lalonde, a Shanghai-based diplomat “persona non grata”. Beijing said that it was a “reciprocal countermeasure” in response to Mr Zhao's expulsion. The decision to expel Mr Zhao was a top trending topic on Chinese social media on Tuesday, with many calling on Beijing to dispense with more diplomats or close consulates.
