US cities with large military bases could experience a significant economic fallout if the US defaults on its debt within two weeks, which would mean the government would be unable to meet its financial obligations. Over a sixth of government spending is dedicated to national defence, which encompasses salaries to federal workers and payments to social security recipients. If the country is unable to pay its national defence bills, cities with large military bases would potentially experience missed payments and rising debt, as well as a significant pullback in spending, which would cut local businesses’ bottom lines.
Wine writer Shana Clarke has published "150 Vineyards to Visit Before You Die" including Japan's MGVs vineyard, which Clarke describes as a laboratory-like building with precise winemaking akin to alchemy; Spain's Bodegas Vega Sicilia's Ontañón Vineyard, featuring vines dating back over 100 years; and Australia's d'Arenberg Cube, a five-storey art and education venue that aims to blur the lines between wine and attraction. The book explores lesser-known vineyards as well as famous ones in France and Italy. The vineyards were chosen to reflect Clarke's "broad story about the world of wine, which meant not just focusing on historically important vineyards, but what may come in the future".
White House and Republican negotiators failed to make progress in raising the federal debt ceiling after a second meeting broke up late on Friday. US Treasury has warned that the federal government could be unable to pay all its debts from 1 June, potentially triggering a default which could cause financial chaos and spike interest rates. Republicans want sharp spending cuts in exchange for increasing the federal government's borrowing limit, while Democrats want to keep spending steady at this year's levels, with a wide swathe of government spending being cut by at least 8% next year.

Officials from the US and Canada have met for their latest round of negotiations over a treaty on flood control and power generation on the Columbia River. Talks concerning the Columbia River Treaty have been ongoing for five years, with the latest round of meetings taking place in Kelowna last week. Under the 1964 agreement, four dams were built, along with related reservoirs and water management infrastructure, to address flooding issues and generate power for the region. The building of dams flooded 1,100 sq km of land and displaced more than 2,000 people, including indigenous communities.
Nebraska lawmakers have approved new bills aimed at targeting abortion rights and restricting healthcare access for transgender youth. Republicans in the state have passed a bill to ban abortion care at roughly 10 weeks of pregnancy, as well as combining with it legislation designed to limit gender-affirming care. The bills, both of which have been subject to protests by residents and ACLU-linked groups, will now go before Republican Governor Jim Pillen. Other US states have introduced similar bills aimed at limiting the rights of LGBT+ people and restricting access to healthcare.
Jay-Z and Beyonce have purchased the most expensive home in California for $200 million. The 40,000 square-foot home, designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, is made from concrete and glass, sits on eight acres on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Malibu, and has been likened to a supervillain's lair. Despite its hefty price tag, the couple is believed to have secured something of a bargain, as it was privately offered to potential buyers with an original asking price of $295 million. The previous record holder was billionaire venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, who paid $177 million for his palatial residence in 2021.
Negotiations between the White House and House Republicans over raising the borrowing limit came to a standstill heading into a weekend during which US President Joe Biden was attending a meeting of global leaders in Japan. The sides face a deadline as soon as 1 June to raise the spending limit, with Republicans demanding spending cuts the Democrats oppose. Talks briefly resumed on Saturday morning only to be interrupted later in the day. The market soured as negotiations hit pause, with experts warning that even the threat of a debt default could spark a recession.

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine has caused China to delay its ambition to invade Taiwan. Speaking at the Financial Times Weekend Festival in Washington, Clinton offered assessments on a range of subjects including Joe Biden’s re-election, US-China relations and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Clinton warned that Donald Trump's re-election in 2024 would “spell the end of democracy” in the US and the “end of Ukraine”. She also described Putin as “complicated, Messianic, narcissistic authoritarian” whose intention was to pull the US out of NATO if Trump won the 2020 presidential election. Clinton added that she no longer believes China’s President Xi will make a move on Taiwan within three or four years as previously expected. Clinton urged voters to judge Biden on his record rather than his age. She also endorsed Biden’s penultimate move to push the Democratic National Committee and overhaul the party’s nominating process in the wake of the 2020 Iowa caucuses marked by delayed results due to a faulty vote-counting app.
