Ontario Environment Minister David Piccini has withdrawn plans to introduce legislation designed to hinder the Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association’s imposition of recycling fees on non-alcoholic drinks in the province. Assurances made to Piccini indicated that the fees will not be added to customers’ receipts. The fees would cover recycling costs at public buildings and areas and bring in around CAD80m ($62m) annually. Environmental Defence claims that a deposit-return system is the only way to hit the government target of an 80% collection rate for beverage containers by the end of the decade.
