Former Hong Kong radio personality Giggs, real name Edmund Wan, has said he feels more comfortable in Vancouver than in his home country. Wan, who was a prominent supporter of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy scene, holds concerns regarding freedom of speech under China’s increasingly authoritarian leadership. Wan moved to British Columbia last month after getting out of jail – he had admitted to charges of sedition and money laundering that human rights group Amnesty International believe were politically motivated. He remains in Canada as a tourist, hoping to become a permanent resident. Wall describes his time behind bars in Hong Kong as often lonely, and his imprisonment highlights China's targeting of political critics. Wan praised Canada’s freedoms, while stressing that Hong Kong’s experience should serve as a warning to countries afraid of upsetting Beijing over human rights concerns.
