US judge in Texas dismisses charges against Swiss banker allegedly tied to Venezuela bribery scheme

Associated Press

23-05-17 22:36

A federal judge in Houston has dismissed criminal charges against Paulo Murta, a Swiss banker accused of helping stash millions in bribes paid to senior Venezuelian oil officials in a money laundering case. The judge ruled that the delays violated his constitutional rights to a speedy trial. Murta was indicted in 2019 on money laundering charges and spent nine months in pre-trial detention before being released on bond. Prosecutors are appealing against the dismissal of charges. Murta was accused of creating fake loans and setting up shell companies in Switzerland, Curacao and Dubai to hide the proceeds of PDVSA's bribery scheme.

Next five years to be hottest ever, likely crossing 1.5 C for a year, says WMO

Japan Times

23-05-18 02:35

The world is most likely to exceed 1.5C of warming for at least one year in the next five years, according to this year’s World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) annual climate update. The report also assigns a 90% probability that at least one of the next five years will be the warmest ever recorded. As things stand, the 2015 Paris Agreement requires efforts to be made to keep global temperature increases well below 2C above pre-industrial levels, although a more ambitious target of 1.5C was also drawn up. Last year’s WMO update assessed the chance of temporarily breaching 1.5C as 50-50. The chance of achieving this has now risen to 66%. In response to the WMO report, Greenpeace UK’s chief scientist Doug Parr said: “increased climate impacts and a potentially disastrous El Nino event should speed up action and ambition from governments, but every year that passes without significant progress is another year closer to a dead end for the climate.”

Akanji wants three trophies to make it an ‘unbelievable’ debut season

The Independent

23-05-18 13:04

Manuel Akanji is targeting the treble for Manchester City after the team advanced to next month's Champions League final by thumping Real Madrid4-0 on Wednesday. If City can achieve success in the FA Cup and Premier League, they will match the feat of Manchester United's 1999 team. City require just one win in the league to clinch the title and secure qualification for next season’s Champions League. City manager Pep Guardiola could decide to rest players in the two fixtures following the fixture against Chelsea if the Premier League is won on Sunday. City have been made favourites among sports betting sites to win all three prestigious trophies available to English teams in the 2020-21 season, after already scooping the Carabao Cup. “It would be unbelievable. It is my first season here. It is the best team I have ever played in and we have been really confident in the second part of the season," said Akanji.

‌Don’t tell your children if you’re on a diet, experts warn

Telegraph

23-05-19 21:30

Parents should avoid telling their children when they are on a diet in order to prevent "weight talk" that lead to poor wellbeing in their offspring, according to a guide by the British Dietetic Association and the University of Bath. The guide suggests avoiding the use of negative language and instead discussing “changes you make in terms of wanting to improve your health and energy” with emphasis on eating more healthily and being more physically active. The advice is backed by the British Government's Office for Health Improvement and Disparities. More than 20% of British children are overweight or obese at the beginning of primary school, according to the NHS.

Hayes, however, expressed respect for her upcoming match against Arsenal, who are third in the table, whilst United boss Marc Skinner described his side’s match against City as “a heavyweight contest – one big punch and the other can be knocked out”.

Why the dollar's dominance is declining in the Middle East

Deutsche Welle

23-05-20 17:42

Several countries across the Middle East have reportedly moved away from the US dollar in reaction to ongoing dollar rationing strategies set in place by the United States. As previously reported, on 15 May 2021 Iraq band all business deals and exchanges of the dollar with Iran, and underlining an existing case where the nation’s authorities made it more difficult for individuals to obtain dollars as the US had revealed increasing concerns that much of its currency was being smuggled to Iran, which is under sanctions. This extreme measure against the dollar has since highlighted a trend in the Middle East where the continuous slowing of the currency’s value has led Saudi Arabia's finance minister to state it is “open” to pricing oil sales using different currencies, including the Chinese yuan and the euro. Similarly, in February this year, Iraq confirmed its intention to conduct business with China using yuan, instead of dollars.
