Bulgaria, which has been caught in a political crisis for two years, may get its first female prime minister in EU commissioner Mariya Gabriel. Bulgaria's largest party, the Gerb, is behind the nomination and leader Boyko Borisov said Gabriel, currently the commissioner for innovation and other areas, was the "undisputed candidate" capable of "put[ting] order in the chaos". Gabriel faces uncertainty in the parliamentary majority as divisions are deep among the country's parties. Sofia has a flawed justice system, is unable to tap into EU recovery funding and is due to join the eurozone next year.
