Biotech firm 3D Bio-Tissues has grown synthetic animal skin made from biological tissue measuring 10cm x 10cm. The technology does not require an animal scaffold to grow, with the firm using biochemical and biophysical markers to prompt cells to arrange themselves correctly into skin. It also does not require animal-derived serums used by other synthetic meat companies. The technology could soon be employed by fashion firms looking to avoid using animal leather, with natural versions said to have a "natural feel." However, it could be five years before the product comes to market.
