Wisconsin Republicans have revealed plans to put $125m towards the prevention of pollution from compounds known as PFAS. The funding will be used to combat PFAS pollution but the exact details of what it will be spent on remain unclear. The move comes after Democratic Governor Tony Evers prioritised PFAS prevention in his budget, dedicating more than $100m to testing, positions, water testing and grants. Republicans, who control the budget-writing process, did not immediately determine how the funding would be spent but called for follow-up legislation outlining how it should be used. PFAS is an abbreviation for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, which are man-made, long-chain polymers that do not readily break down in nature. These substances are found in a range of household items and have been linked to health problems including low birth weight, cancer and liver disease.
