The death of the cheap European holiday – and the destinations where your money stretches furthest

Telegraph

23-05-20 10:00

The cost of travel, even budget travel, has surged since the pandemic hit, according to an article in The Telegraph. Airlines, hotels, travel agents and restaurants are scrambling to recover lost revenue, which has pushed up the cost of flights and accommodation across Europe by 23% since 2021, according to Consumer Choice. The Post Office reported that 27 out of 35 cities are charging more for hotels, and car hire fees in seven out of nine popular holiday destinations now cost over £100 more than before the pandemic. However, demand is still high due to people having built up holiday savings during lockdown and the high cost of living lingering in many households. Ground travel, such as train travel, has seen only a 3% rise in prices since 2019 and is expected to become more popular, given the rising cost of flights.

Haaland goals and Man City tactical switch the keys to winning Premier League title

Associated Press

23-05-20 18:43

Manchester City has won their third consecutive Premier League title and seventh in 12 seasons. They clinched the victory with three games to spare after Arsenal lost to Nottingham Forest. Manager Pep Guardiola's tactical changes were a significant factor in their success, moving from 4-3-3 to 3-2-4-1 to incorporate the addition of early-season signing Erling Haaland. This change allowed for Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne to play further forward, and Jack Grealish's performance also improved drastically. City relied on consistency from Rodri as a holding midfielder and would need a new backup this summer.

Over 2,000 East Timorese people living in Northern Ireland are registered to vote in their country's parliamentary elections, thanks to a specially designated polling station in County Tyrone. Deutsche Welle

23-05-21 06:56

US President Joe Biden has publicly committed his support to Ukraine against Russia's invasion by announcing a new weapons package at the G7 summit. The announcement follows the US permitting the transfer of advanced F-16 jets to the embattled country. The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, issued a whistle-stop tour of European countries last week where he secured a €2.7bn ($2.9bn) military aid package from Germany, in addition to separate commitments from France and Britain. Zelenskyy also made a surprise visit to G7 talks where he called for a peace agreement.

Revenge of the orcas? Killer whales have sunk 3 boats in unusual attacks.

Washington Post

23-05-21 11:46

Orcas off the coast of Spain and Portugal have led to the sinking of boats, leading researchers to believe they may be seeking revenge for a female orca that had suffered a traumatic experience with a boat. A marine biologist at the University of Aveiro in Portugal suggested that a female orca called White Gladis had started attacking boats after a “critical moment of agony” and had taught other adult orcas to do the same. While the “disruptive” interactions between orcas and boats were generally minor, some had resulted in sinkings. Researchers warned that the situation could become an issue for the safety of sailors and the orcas themselves, especially as the animals are endangered in the area.

Brazil’s Lula ‘upset’ at not meeting with Zelensky at G7

South China Morning Post

23-05-22 02:35

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has expressed disappointment at not meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 summit last week and accused Zelensky of showing no interest in negotiating peace with Russia. Zelensky had sought a one-on-one meeting with Lula, though scheduling conflicts were blamed for the failure to meet. Lula said he did not see the point in meeting Zelensky now, as he said that neither he nor Russian leader Vladimir Putin appeared to want peace, with both sides convinced they would win the war. Lula has been pushing for peace talks and has offered Brazil, along with other neutral countries such as China and Indonesia, as a mediator. Zelensky emerged from the summit with increased diplomatic support and new pledges of military aid.

Portuguese wine used to be my insider tip — now it’s everywhere

Financial Times Opinion

23-05-22 09:19

Portuguese wine sales have soared by up to 70% over the past five years as US tourism to Portugal explodes, according to reports by several US and UK importers. Raymond Reynolds, who brought Portuguese wine to the UK in the 1990s, said the opening up of Portuguese wineries and the cultivation of emerging indigenous grape varieties has been welcomed by consumers in the US and the UK. Maxwell Working of New York importer Skurnik said that although Greece had become a key wine producer off the radar for now, Portuguese wines were becoming more established with Filipa Pato’s Bairrada reds selling well in New York. While the market has become congested, Reynolds sees continued growth due to the country's spectrum of winemakers and dedicated terroirs: "The good thing is we are just at the beginning of this journey”. Hague and Kastner director John Kapon said Portugal was now catching up with Italy in quality.

Vatican confirms August trip by pope to Lisbon for World Youth Day, including Fatima stop

The Toronto Star

23-05-22 10:42

Pope Francis will travel to Portugal’s World Youth Day between 2-6 August 2023, in a longer visit than initially expected. As part of the journey, the pontiff will stop at the Fatima Marian shrine on 5 August, in what will be his second pilgrimage there, following his visit in 2017 to mark the 100th anniversary of visions of the Virgin Mary reported by three shepherd children. The “secrets” conveyed by the visions involved apocalyptic messages of war, death, hell and communism that have fascinated Catholics and non-Catholics for the last century. Francis’ visit this year comes against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has provided comparative context to the original visions, which were reported in the heart of World War I Europe.

Police to search Algarve reservoir visited by Madeleine McCann suspect

The Independent

23-05-22 16:04

Police searching for Madeleine McCann plan to conduct a major search of a remote reservoir in Portugal that suspect Christian Brueckner used to visit. The 45-year-old paedophile is currently jailed near Bremen for raping an American pensioner in 2005, the same resort where Madeleine vanished two years later. A peninsula jutting into the Algarve reservoir where Brueckner is believed to have visited was sealed off on Monday. British police will travel to Portugal to observe the new search, according to reports, while Scotland Yard liaison officers are expected to keep Madeleine’s parents informed of any developments. The searches are expected to take several days to complete.
