The UK is experiencing a surge in small, local music festivals, which are affordable, locally run and have fewer than 5,000 attendees. Figures show there are 975 music festivals in the UK with 778 identified as micro festivals, often organised on a voluntary basis not driven by headline acts, and the sector is attracting a broad demographic. These festivals represent "extraordinary" value for money in comparison to concerts, especially those in stadiums, according to John Rostron, chief executive of the Association of Independent Festivals, which represents more than 100 events. Festival-goers can watch 10 bands every day for three days for a third of the price of one concert ticket. The number of these events is expected to continue to grow, boosted in part by public funding, as is the case for the Devauden Festival in Monmouthshire. The event was awarded a £157,800 grant from the Welsh Government over three years, provided it hits certain targets.
