Irish singer CMAT has revealed that during her last tour she unknowingly fractured her neck after extensive bouts of head-banging led to a collapsed larynx. CMAT, real name Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, progressed through her tour despite fracturing her neck and subsequently injuring her larynx. Active vocal performance over a long period can cause injury, according to vocal physiotherapist Nikki Franklin, who argued that singers who repeatedly use their voice can cause a build-up of tension that could eventually lead to a break. Despite her injuries, CMAT has now recovered and is back to performing.
