Manchester City and Real Madrid are set to face off in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final, with the first game ending in a 1-1 draw. Though City have home advantage, Madrid have a strong record in the tournament, having beaten both Chelsea and City last season. The winner of the tie will face Inter Milan in the final. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said that his career will not be defined by whether the team wins the tournament, rather that he is proud of how far they have come.
Alexander Zverev’s ankle ligament tear in the 2022 French Open semi-final appears to be the turning point of his career, as his recent comments express growing frustration and doubt. The German tennis star is experiencing a year of setbacks and failures, with an increasing sense of doubt growing amid his recent losses. Tennis legend Boris Becker said Zverev has yet to adapt his game to tennis in 2023 and is being overtaken by younger players such as Carlos Alcaraz. Zverev has lost his spot as Germany's No.1 player to Jan-Lennard Struff, who recently reached the final of the Madrid open.
Regional and national elections in Madrid will determine whether Spain's ultra-rich pay the Solidarity tax, which was introduced in December 2021 and targets individuals with more than $4.1m in wealth and imposes a temporary levy of up to 3.5%. This tax has caused unrest among the country's 27,000 millionaires or billionaires, many of whom are seeking ways to avoid paying it and some of whom are considering moving away from the country altogether. Madrid's conservative president, Isabel Ayuso, has also expressed criticism of the tax and has challenged it in court.
Manchester City's victory over Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 at the Etihad Stadium has been hailed as Pep Guardiola's finest moment in Europe. City dominated the reigning champions and ultimately secured a 2-1 aggregate victory that put them through to the quarter-finals. It has been suggested that this was an inevitable result given that City has become the most lavish sporting project ever seen, built upon intelligent planning and the near-perfect conditions created by Abu Dhabi's large-scale backing of the club over a sustained period.
Manchester City are only three games from a historic treble after defeating Real Madrid 4-0 on the night and 5-1 over two legs to advance to the Champions League final. Bernardo Silva scored twice with an own goal by Eder Militao and a goal from Gabriel Jesus sub Julian Alvarez sealing victory over the holders, booking a final against Inter Milan. Pep Guardiola's side, runners-up two years ago to Chelsea, are now favourites to win the trophy for the first time since the club was bought by Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Mansour in 2008.
Manchester City dominated Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final, with Bernardo Silva's 23rd minute strike securing their place in the final and keeping their Treble hopes alive. The match saw City make eight shots to Real's none, with Kevin De Bruyne's pinpoint pass finding Silva for City's first goal. The match marked a rare one-sided victory, with Real unable to get out of their own half under wave after wave of pressure from City. This is the second time City have reached the Champions League final. They will face Inter Milan in Istanbul.
World No 1 Novak Djokovic is out of the Italian Open following his defeat against Denmark’s Holger Rune. His performance was uncharacteristically poor, and his below-par physical condition suggested health issues were affecting him. Djokovic is going into this year’s French Open without having reached a clay-court semi-final, which is untypical for him. With Rafael Nadal absent from the tour since January, a couple of emerging favourites – Rune and Carlos Alcaraz – are being talked about by bookmakers. Nadal’s withdrawal from Roland Garros is expected to be announced soon. This year’s Italian Open won’t feature a final without Djokovic or Nadal for the first time since 2004. Murray’s defeat against Wawrinka in the second round of the ATP Challenger Tour event in Bordeaux further adds to his downward slide in the tennis world. Meanwhile, Djokovic might be closing his tennis centre in Belgrade following news that Romanian billionaire Ion Tiriac’s licence has been taken back.
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has spoken of the need for “bravery, courage and character” from his side as they look to overcome Manchester City and reach the final of the Champions League. Ancelotti’s team, who won the first leg of their semi-final against City 1-0, will need to end the home side’s 25-match unbeaten record if they are to progress. Real are boosted by the absence of City midfielder Yaya Toure, who will miss the game through suspension. Ancelotti called on his players to be brave and to control possession in order to contain City’s attacking threat. Real have reached the semi-finals in 11 of the last 13 years. The final will be held in Milan at the end of the month.
Manchester City is just three games away from achieving a treble of a Premier League title, FA Cup and Champions League trophy for the 2020/21 season. Pep Guardiola urged his players to become history makers ahead of the Etihad Stadium side's second Champions League final in three years against Inter Milan on 29 May. A victory for City in the final will be the club's first European Cup and will make it the second English side in history to win a treble. City will first face Chelsea in the Premier League on 8 May.
Manchester City’s front line of Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne proved too much for Real Madrid, allowing City plenty of possession and enabling Bernardo Silva to score two goals in the Champions League semi-final. De Bruyne and Haaland’s pressure from the front was advantageous to City, with Real failing to leave their own third in the first half. This was the match the Belgian midfielder required to give him that legacy moment and he is expected to relish playing a role in taking City to the Champions League final against Inter Milan.
Manchester City beat Real Madrid 4-0 on May 5 to secure their place in the Champions League final against Inter Milan, with manager Pep Guardiola saying revenge for last season’s semi-final heartache fuelled the team. Bernardo Silva scored two goals, with Eder Militao scoring an own goal and substitute Julian Alvarez scoring in a stunning last-four display. Guardiola wants to take each match seriously, saying he hates arrogance in sport. Manchester City are overwhelming favourites to beat Inter and lift the FA Cup against Manchester United, and odds-on to complete the treble.
The Norman Foster Foundation and Swiss cement giant Holcim have created a prototype for emergency housing, intended to last up to 20 years, and which has much less carbon content than traditional housing, with none of the waste of plastic tents. The homes can be erected in less than 24 hours, using a structural shell that is rolled out like a carpet and then hardened with water, with insulation and waterproofing built in, and sitting on an aggregate base. Formed as a catenary arch, the home, set inside an internal courtyard type structure, features a shower, toilet, washbasin, double and single beds, and seating. The cost will be significantly lower than most previous emergency housing, and it is intended to give its occupants safety and dignity. A single full-scale model is on show at this year's Biennale in Venice.

Manchester City defeated Real Madrid 4-0 to secure a place in the Champions League final, with a 5-1 aggregate win. Two goals by Bernardo Silva, a Julian Alvarez strike in stoppage time and an Eder Militao own goal completed City's thrashing of a side that knocked them out of the UEFA tournament in the same stage last season. City, which has never won this title, will now face Inter Milan in Istanbul on 10 June. The win in the first leg and in this match helped Guardiola's squad put disappointments from the past behind them.
More than 90% of countries now consider health risks from malaria to heart disease in their climate plans, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), according to WHO data. This is up from 70% in 2020 and follows warnings from climate scientists that the 1.5o C temperature limit set in the 2015 Paris Agreement is a crucial tipping point after which impacts such as sea level rise and extreme temperatures will become more severe. A study last year found that air pollution causes more than 6.5 million deaths a year globally, a number that is growing.
Manchester City's win against Real Madrid was possibly their best performance ever under Pep Guardiola, particularly in the first half. The team came out strong with a swarm that blocked all of Real's attempts to make any headway, with players such as Jack Grealish stepping up to tackle his opponents when not in possession. Kyle Walker also had a flawless game keeping Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior pinned down to his own half and stopping him from making any real ground. Kevin De Bruyne showed his versatility as an attacking midfielder and Bernardo Silva's cool finishes were key. The match has been compared to the likes of Liverpool's 4-0 win against Barcelona in the 2018/2019 season and Manchester United's 7-1 win against Roma.
Real Madrid’s incumbent manager, Carlo Ancelloti, looks set for a shock departure despite being contracted for another season, following a comprehensive 4-0 defeat against Manchester City in the Champions League. Real’s CEO, Florentino Perez, is understood to have made the decision, despite earlier briefings to the contrary. Last night’s result, which follows a run of poor form, has prompted talk of a major overhaul, but with few candidate replacements for Ancelloti, the mood around Real is one of uncertainty. Meanwhile, at Real's European rivals, Manchester United, Louis Van Gaal is expected to come under increased pressure following his side’s 3-2 defeat last night against West Ham Utd. Mourinho is reported to be United’s preferred successor.
Real Madrid may face a summer exodus with doubts raised about the future of the club's coach, Carletto Ancelotti, and players whose contracts expire at the end of the season, including Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. The club was knocked out of the Champions League earlier this week after a humiliating 4-0 loss to Manchester City, ending the club's hopes of extending the run of five Champions League final appearances in six years. Madrid is set to finish the season trophy-less, with its only hopes focusing on their league campaign and a second-place finish to Atletico Madrid.
A documentary about the legal battles between the US actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard is set to be shown on UK television this weekend. Depp and Heard began a relationship in 2012, married in 2015, divorced in 2017, and have been locked in litigation ever since.
Manchester City beat Real Madrid 4-0 in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final to set up a meeting with Inter Milan in next month’s final in Istanbul. Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva scored twice in the win, and is determined to avoid a repeat of City’s last appearance in the final, when they lost to Chelsea.
