Boeing boss cools hopes for sustainable aviation fuels

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun has reportedly warned that sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) will never achieve the price of jet fuel. SAF is touted as a possible alternative to kerosene-type fuels used in aircraft today to rapidly decarbonise the aviation sector, but accounts for under 1% of aviation consumption, trades at a cost of at least twice the price of traditional jet fuel and has no cheap means of production, according to industry insiders. Robert Campbell, head of energy transition research at Energy Aspects, said Calhoun’s admission was the industry’s “quiet bit out loud”.
