Andrew Bailey admits Britain is suffering a wage-price spiral

Telegraph

23-05-17 16:00

The Bank of England is concerned about the UK entering a wage-price spiral, with second-round effects likely to persist, Governor Andrew Bailey has warned. Speaking to business leaders, he said the Bank's repeated interest rate hikes aimed at preventing high inflation from becoming embedded in the wider economy had failed to keep a lid on inflation caused by domestically-generated factors. Private sector wages grew 7% in Q1, well above the central bank's 2% inflation target. Bailey said inflation may take longer to fall than forecast, which could mean interest rates remaining high for longer.

Albania’s 200 most dangerous criminals to be deported from UK

Telegraph

23-05-17 21:00

The UK is set to deport up to 200 Albanian criminals to serve the remaining parts of their sentences in Albanian jails, with the deal being paid for by the UK. Many of those set to be deported include murderers, gangsters and drug barons. The move is part of a wider drive in the UK to expel Albanians who have been convicted of crimes and imprisoned in the country. Those jailed for more than four years will eligible for the transfer, costing the UK a fraction of what it would to hold them in high-security facilities.

Pledge of Allegiant: Why NRL is on collision course with ‘Death Star’

The Sydney Morning Herald

23-05-17 19:47

The National Rugby League (NRL) is considering hosting double-header games at the recently built Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas as part of its push to expand the sport in the US. The plan would involve four top NRL teams, including South Sydney and Manly, playing two competition games at the stadium as part of an entertainment blitz that includes other Australian entertainers and sporting events. The NRL wants to cash in on the explosion of legalised gambling in the US and the potential of the market to provide funding. The league also hopes to monetise providing more eyeballs on the game from the US.

Club-vs-country compromise hampers Lionesses' World Cup preparations

Telegraph

23-05-17 19:06

FIFA, football clubs, and other industry stakeholders have agreed on a date on which players should start preparing for Australia and New Zealand's Women's World Cup. Clubs and countries had previously been at odds, with clubs citing concerns over player welfare and injury risks while national teams were concerned that player rest periods would lead to deconditioning before the World Cup was due to take place. FIFA imposed a mandatory release date for players on 10 July for 2023's Women's World Cup. Now, players may prepare for the tournament no earlier than 23 June and no later than 29 June.

First full-sized 3D scan of the Titanic shipwreck captured

Al Jazeera

23-05-17 19:01

The Titanic shipwreck has been visualised in full for the first time using a full-sized 3D scan created with deep-sea mapping gathered during a six-week expedition by two submersibles. Scientists involved in the project described it as a “game-changer” and said it offered to “completely rewrite” our understanding of the Titanic disaster. The scans may shed more light on what exactly happened when the largest ocean liner of its time collided with an iceberg, leading to the deaths of an estimated 1,500 people. The new data could also offer an insight into the disintegration of the ship.

Water companies apologise for sewage spills and promise to invest £10bn to reduce them

Telegraph

23-05-17 22:32

Water industry body Water UK has apologised and promised sweeping improvement to UK sewage systems, in response to several environmental groups' campaigns. Decades of underinvestment in water systems have led to sewage being dumped in rivers and waterways hundreds of thousands of times annually in what the BBC has described as a “sewage crisis”. A £10bn ($12.6bn) plan includes the installation of water storage tanks to replace those overburdened by population expansion, as well as ponds to replace outdated concrete. The improvements will be paid for through customer bills. The plan is expected to reduce last year’s spills of 300,000 by 10%.

Massive cost of obesity to NHS revealed

Telegraph

23-05-17 22:09

A study presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Dublin found that NHS patients who are of healthy weight cost 54% less than those who are overweight or obese. In total, patients who were a healthy weight cost the health service an average of £638 each per year, which is less than the £1,375 a year spent on the most obese patients with a BMI over 40. Across the study, just one-third of participants had a healthy weight. The extra costs of those who are not of a healthy weight is primarily due to treating obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cancer, and heart diseases. A ban on buy one, get one free offers for unhealthy food and drinks is due to come into force this autumn. Restrictions on television and online advertisements for junk foods are scheduled for 2025 after a series of delays. The findings suggest that the NHS could save nearly £14 billion a year if everyone was a healthy weight.

Hunter: England coaching role ‘too big an opportunity to turn down’

The Independent

23-05-17 22:00

Former England captain Sarah Hunter has been inducted into the Rugby Players’ Association’s Hall of Fame weeks after her hometown retirement. Hunter is the most capped England rugby player and her admittance to the Hall of Fame is seen as a major accolade for her career. Joining a list of rugby greats, Hunter says she felt honored by the recognition and was particularly pleased to be inducted alongside Doddie Weir. Both Hunter and Weir are embarking on a new chapter in their rugby journeys, with Hunter moving into coaching with the England team under John Mitchell and Weir’s Foundation continuing to raise funds for MND until a cure can be found. In Hunter’s opinion, we should eventually stop dividing rugby into rugby and women’s rugby, and simply have rugby for everyone. Hunter, who played for England for 14 years, believes maintaining momentum is key to the women’s game’s improving with time and she has been extremely involved and influential in supporting the women’s national team throughout her evolving career.

Former business secretaries attack Sunak’s lack of industrial strategy

Financial Times

23-05-18 04:33

Three former UK business secretaries from different parties, Lord Mandelson, Sir Vince Cable and Greg Clark, have accused Chancellor Rishi Sunak of having neither an effective nor visible industrial strategy. Clark said Sunak had never even referred to the subject. Mandelson said the lack of enthusiasm had resulted in a confused policy, while Cable said it had been discontinued due to "ideological zealotry". Senior government insiders admitted the policy was not contained within a single document and was a "comms issue". The role of the state in economies recently has highlighted a difference between European and US approaches.

Business schools experiment with consultancy

Financial Times

23-05-18 04:25

Business schools are setting up consulting arms to apply academic knowledge on the wider market. Bayes Consulting, part of Bayes Business School at City, University of London, offers bespoke solutions to corporate clients, while Durban University Business School, among others, also offers academic knowledge on a consultancy basis. Professor Daniel Beunza, a social studies of finance expert, advises the Financial Services Culture Board, a membership organisation that teaches executives how to carry out on-the-ground cultural analysis. Such services see competition between business schools and traditional firms, such as Boston Consulting Group, ramp up. While some leaders, like Patrick De Greve at Vlerick Business School in Belgium, see consultancy as potentially damaging strategic partnerships, others believe it offers the chance to deliver on social missions.

Need to Know: how will UK crypto regulation affect me?

Financial Times

23-05-18 04:20

The UK’s Treasury select committee has called for cryptocurrencies to be subject to gambling regulations in addition to its own proposals for the sector. The committee’s members said that cryptocurrencies had “no intrinsic value, huge price volatility and no discernible social good”. It argued that government measures, drawn up in February, upheld a “halo effect” in consumers’ minds, indicating that assets were safe and protected. According to the Treasury, regulations would govern the release, trade and lending of digital tokens in order to safeguard customers’ funds. Measures could include the ring-fencing of customers’ money in the event of insolvency, and due diligence and monitoring for all digital assets featured on traders’ platforms. Experts have also claimed that cryptocurrency investing is equivalent to gambling.

Failure to spot inflation dents central banks’ credibility

Financial Times

23-05-18 04:20

Central banks globally have been accused of failing to spot the degree to which inflation rates would rise and stick, despite record monetary and fiscal support. Almost all rate-setters failed to foresee inflation rising and then overestimated the pace of decline. Advanced economies are experiencing the most vigorous and enduring outbreak of inflation in a generation. The Bank of England is currently holding a “Festival of Mistakes” to celebrate lessons learnt from financial disasters of the past, instead of what some suggest should be more recent errors. Central bankers failing to identify soaring inflation have not only left themselves risking financial instability due to being forced to raise rates faster than is usual but threatened the credibility of institutions that rely on trust to steer the economy toward sustainable growth.

FIFA’s Infantino optimistic about Women’s World Cup TV deals in Europe

The Toronto Star

23-05-18 03:13

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is hopeful broadcasters in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and England can reach what he perceives as acceptable deals despite the Women’s World Cup looming. Infantino says discussions with the broadcasters are moving in the right direction, yet the offers for the broadcast rights only a few weeks ago in relation to men’s rights showed “disrespect” for women’s sport field leveling. FIFA has tripled the prize money from 2019 for this year’s Women’s World Cup winners. Infantino says he is still committed to getting more money from the largest European broadcasters to benefit the sport overall.

UK water industry’s apology for sewage spills condemned as ‘vacuous’

Financial Times

23-05-18 08:19

Water UK, the trade body for utilities companies, has offered an apology for the dumping of large quantities of sewage in English and Welsh waterways and coastal waters, and confirmed a pledge to commit £10bn to cut sewage outflows. This amount will need to be approved by regulator Ofwat. Customers will pay through an increased charge on their bills. Singer Feargal Sharkey, who is leading a campaign against sewage pollution, condemned the plans. Around 20% of treated water is lost to leakages and just 16% of treated waters meet the minimum good ecological status standards. Yorkshire Water, South West Water and Thames Water chiefs declined bonus pay following recent public protests at cuts over sewage pollution.

Liverpool captain Henderson ready for new challenge as overhaul begins

The Independent

23-05-18 07:12

Jordan Henderson spoke about Liverpool’s midfield overhaul next season and is optimistic about his team’s consistency and ability to challenge Manchester City. Individuals such as Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, veteran James Milner, and Roberto Firmino will be leaving this season. However, Henderson is confident that his team will have no problem “refreshing” the midfield. Liverpool is currently interested in Brighton’s Argentinean World Cup winner, Alexis Mac Allister, as one option. “I don’t think it’s a rebuild to be honest. I do think there will be new players coming in. A rebuild is changing an entire team – which I don’t think we will be doing”, explained Henderson. He also mentioned that the club’s core team is still in “great shape” to compete successfully.

Tom Pearson: 'My style of play is like Pieter-Steph du Toit'

Telegraph

London Irish flanker Tom Pearson has won the Rugby Players’ Association young player of the year award. Pearson helped steer the Exiles to fifth place in the Premiership during a season filled with uncertainty surrounding the financial future of the club. Live Markets Deutsche Bank to pay £60m to settle lawsuit by Epstein accusers - latest updates

BT is planning to cut up to 42% of its workforce over the next seven years as it seeks to reduce costs and boost profit growth, according to CEO Philip Jansen. Total workers, including employees and contractors, will fall from around 130,000 to between 75,000 and 90,000 by 2030. The telecommunications company has aimed for annual savings of £3bn ($4.1bn) by the end of 2025. The firm has been reducing its workforce for the past five years, though more drastic cuts have been considered since 2019. Jansen’s planned reductions, which will come into effect over several years, reflect in part the shift towards automation and digitalisation in the telecoms industry, as well as the firm’s drive to improve its responsiveness to customers.
