Dallas Federal Reserve Bank President Lorie Logan has claimed that she is worried that “much too high” inflation has not slowed enough to let the US Federal Reserve pause its interest-rate increase campaign in June. While acknowledging that future data readings could justify skipping a meeting, Logan asserted that inflation levels had yet to reach that point. The Federal Reserve will meet on 13 to 14 June.
Lorie Logan, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, has said that high inflation shows no signs of cooling down, and it doesn't look like the regulator will be taking a break from interest-rate hikes in June either. Logan added that she believes rate increases are necessary to bring inflation down to the 2% level, but that she also understands the dangers of raising rates too quickly. She also warned banks to prepare for any potential liquidity issues during periods of stress.
Driving legends Richard Petty, Jeff Gordon and Lyn St. James are among those who want NASCAR to return to Rockingham Speedway, which last hosted a Cup Series event in 2004. Labonte also stated he would like to see the 1-mile track brought back to the NASCAR calendar. However, Dale Earnhardt Jr voiced concern, worried about there being too many Cup races so close to each other. The track was recently revived, with a repave after it received a $9m investment from North Carolina as part of a federal economic effort.
Several US cities and California will benefit from federal help with the All Inside initiative in getting the homeless into permanent housing. The state of California, which has the highest number of homeless people in the country, will receive the tailored support for two years from US government departments, local agencies and private businesses. The program seeks to provide knowledge, resources and funding, in addition to help in identifying where regulations can be loosened to help those without a home find shelter more quickly.
The Dallas Wings will begin their season at home against the Atlanta Dream. Dallas had an 8-10 home record and 18-18 record overall last season, while Atlanta had a 6-12 road record and a 14-22 record overall. Neither team has any reported injuries for the game.

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) will begin its 27th season this weekend, with speculation rife as to which team will come out on top. Her team mate, Diana Taurasi, will return for her 19th season as the league’s all-time leading scorer.
No Canada, but the NHL's final four could still be fun

The NHL Conference Finals will open this week and the competing teams have resulted in the league billing it as the "southernmost" final four ever as all of the semifinalists are based in Sun Belt states. These comprise Carolina, Dallas, Las Vegas and Florida. None of these teams have been in their current locations for more than 30 years, and the Golden Knights are just five years old. The four franchises have combined to win only two Stanley Cups.
Mike McKool, co-founder of national trial law firm McKool Smith, has left the organisation to represent an unidentified new client. The firm was initially set to handle the case, but conflicts with existing clients led McKool to take it on independently. McKool declined to give any details about the case or client. The firm's size is unlikely to be affected by the departure of McKool, who resigned as chairman of the firm in 2021. Last week, lawyers from McKool Smith helped Netlist win a $303m jury verdict against Samsung in a patent case.
Prospective NBA draft picks have highlighted LeBron James as the gold standard for professional basketball. At the NBA draft combine, the prospects continue to see James as an all-around iconic player, who they take inspiration from both on and off the court. Vanderbilt guard Brandon Miller and Georgia’s Scoot Henderson cite James' trademark focus on body conditioning as important to his success, while other prospects praised the Lakers forward for his off-court charitable work and contributions to his family. Harden warns that though he "trusts" that Curry and the Warriors will be successful, both he and Durant "will compete for a championship every year".
The Florida Panthers won Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final, beating the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in the sixth-longest game in NHL history. Matthew Tkachuk scored the game-winning goal in the fourth overtime, while Sergei Bobrovsky made 63 saves for the Panthers. The game was the longest in either franchise's history and saw Florida win its seventh straight road game in the playoffs and improve to 5-0 in overtime. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday night.
The increased use of social media during emergency situations is causing public information officers to rethink how they communicate. If law enforcement officials are slow to release official information, members of the public will often go online for answers, leading to the circulation of misleading information. However, public information officers have also recognised that social media channels provide an opportunity to interact with the public to get information or to provide advice and guidance. While the speed of social media means there is no escaping the immediacy of communication during an emergency situation, police forces also have to be careful to provide complete and accurate information.
The recent bank failures, including that of Silicon Valley Bank, may limit how much further the Federal Reserve will need to raise its benchmark interest rate, according to the Chair of the Federal Reserve, Jay Powell. The credit crunch resulting from the bank failures is contributing to tighter credit conditions, economic growth, hiring and inflation, he warned. Powell said that, due to this, policymakers may need to forgo further tightening. He added that the extent of the impact of these credit conditions is "highly uncertain". His comments were made as Fed policymakers debate whether to press ahead with an 11th straight rate rise next month or pause tightening. Since March 2022, the Fed has raised its benchmark policy rate by more than 5 percentage points to a target range of 5%-5.25%; this rise has been viewed by Powell as notable. However, he advised there was "uncertainty about lagged effects" of tightening already applied, "about the extent of credit tightening from these banking stresses", and "about their effects on growth".
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell indicated that the Fed is unlikely to increase its benchmark interest rate at its upcoming June meeting, which will be the first since it started raising the rate over a year ago, saying that the key rate is already high enough to restrict borrowing, spending and economic growth, in turn potentially cooling inflation. Powell’s remarks come amid a series of mixed messages from Fed officials this week about raising rates further to combat inflation. Inflation, measured by the Fed’s preferred metric, has slowed from 7% last June to 4.2% in March.
This little-known rule shapes parking in America. Cities are reversing it

The policy of mandatory minimum parking requirements, which requires parking spaces for a large number of buildings, is starting to be scrutinized by cities and towns across the United States. Critics say that parking minimums reduce the supply of housing, making it more expensive for people who are looking for affordable housing. According to WGI, a construction engineering company, it costs around $28,000 to build a parking spot in the US, with construction costs highest in New York City, where a new parking spot costs up to $36,000. Mandatory parking requirements also have environmental consequences, such as increasing traffic congestion and carbon emissions because fewer people walk or cycle. A number of cities, both Republican-led and Democrat-led, are reforming parking rules, with California being the first state to pass legislation that ends parking minimums for new developments nearby to public transit. US Representative Robert Garcia, a Democrat from California, recently introduced a bill that would eliminate parking minimums for new affordable residential, retail, industrial, and commercial construction.
The Dallas Wings beat the Atlanta Dream 85-78 in their season opener, with Arike Ogunbowale scoring 27 points. Satou Sabally added 25 points and Natasha Howard had 20 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks for Dallas. In her first game as a WNBA head coach, Latricia Trammell led her team to victory. Atlanta's Rhyne Howard had 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Cheyenne Parker added 18 points and 11 rebounds and Allisha Gray had 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Diamond DeShields, acquired by the Wings from Phoenix via a four-team trade in February, did not play due to a knee injury.
The Dallas Stars have shown an amazing ability in the NHL playoffs to respond to early adversity, including Friday night’s 4-3 defeat to the Vegas Golden Knights. The Stars have opened all three playoff series with an overtime loss and have come back to win the other two series following similar situations. Although the other two ended positively, the Stars need to win overtime games if they want to advance in the playoffs. The teams meet again in Game 2 on Sunday in Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas Aces began their title defence by beating the Seattle Storm 105-64 on 15 May. Las Vegas was without their head coach Becky Hammon, who was suspended for the game after being investigated by the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) over allegations of bullying from former Aces player Dearica Hamby. Arike Ogunbowale led the Dallas Wings with 27 points to defeat the Atlanta Dream 85-78. Satou Sabally had 25 points for the Wings, and Natasha Howard added 20 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.
The four remaining teams in the NHL playoffs, the Vegas Golden Knights, Carolina Hurricanes, Dallas Stars and Florida Panthers have skills and tactics worth copying, according to Dave Poulin, TSN hockey analyst. While they each have star performers, technical similarities between the four include a strong recognition of time, well-executed defensive systems and offensive scoring balance, with goals coming from everyone rather than relying on superstar players. Poulin praised the coaches of each team, who have "combined over 3,500 regular season games behind the bench".
The Houston Dynamo have secured a 1-1 draw with FC Dallas at the Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Jáder Obrian scored in the 53rd minute to put Dallas ahead, but Thorleifur Úlfarsson scored for Houston in the 85th minute to ensure a draw. Úlfarsson took a pass from Héctor Herrera to net for the first time this term. Houston, who have gone 4-23-4 over their last 31 matches away from home, haven't secured a win in their last 16 road matches in Texas in all competitions and haven't won against Dallas since 2017. The result saw Dallas's unbeaten record in their last 11 home matches ended, with the side having only conceded two home goals in their last 17. Dallas will play away at San Jose Earthquakes next Saturday, while Houston hosts Austin FC.
The Vancouver Whitecaps extended their home undefeated streak to six Major League Soccer games with a 2-0 win over the Seattle Sounders. Vancouver's Pedro Vite opened the scoring late in the first half before Seattle scored an own goal early in the second half resulting from a shot by Ryan Gauld. The win improved the Whitecaps to 17 points and leapfrogged them into seventh place in the MLS Western Conference. The Sounders are second in the West with 23 points.
